What is Recreation?

Whether wild and wacky, or relaxed and casual, nothing beats recreation for having fun, good times and making friends. There’s nothing like the great feeling of physical achievement, well-being and satisfaction recreation can give you. But most of all, it’s simply a great way to feel good and build your self-esteem.

If you are a child, teenager or adult with a disability, Yooralla's Recreation team can get you more actively involved in all kinds of recreational experiences. The Recreation Team has workers with particular expertise in:

  • health and fitness
  • holidays and travel
  • aquatics
  • community recreation

We also specialise in services for children, youth and families. We offer support and information on recreation choices for:

  • parents and children to share
  • parents to have a break where needed
  • children and teenagers to join in community recreation
  • the whole family to enjoy a holiday together

We also run various workshops and courses, and are involved in joint projects with other community groups.

Eligibility

Our services are available for children, teenagers and adults with disabilities. Service priority is given to people who have high and complex support needs and/or are:

  • socially isolated
  • geographically isolated
  • lack appropriate support structures
  • economically disadvantaged
  • experiencing cultural barriers

Referral and application

You can inquire about Yooralla's Recreation Service via the telephone, mail, fax or email. Once a request is made, the appropriate worker will meet with you to discuss your request in more detail. You may choose to have an advocate and/or a support person present. This meeting usually occurs in the home, or in an environment where you feel comfortable.

At this first meeting the worker will also outline the information required by Yooralla (ie. client care, service plan, other services received etc.). This initial meeting also provides an opportunity for you to determine whether or not we are the most appropriate service. If it is determined that we are not the most appropriate service option for you, then the relevant worker concerned will assist you to access an alternative service.
